1. Marina Grande beach

10 best things to do in Capri

Marina Grande will welcome you on the island: besides the crowds of tourists disembarking from the ferries, in its harbor, you will find the boats that organize the tour of the island … or the luxury yachts of the millionaires!

Marina Grande is often considered only a transit area to go up to Capri, via the funicular, and visit the famous Piazzetta. But this area of the island also offers the largest beach in Capri which is almost entirely free! Furthermore, you can reach the Terme di Tiberio from here, just in a few minutes, along a path that smells of lemons.

2. Tour of the island: Faraglioni and Blue Grotto

To fully appreciate the beauty of Capri, there is nothing better than exploring the island by boat. As we said, the tours start right from Marina Grande. Climb aboard a gozzo and let yourself be dazzled by the Blue Grotto, so named for the extraordinary optical effect created by the sunlight that bounces off the cave walls and makes the water blue.

Get obsessed and take as many photos as possible when passing through the iconic Faraglioni, the three massive limestone stacks that emerge from the sea. Off the coast of Punta Tragara, let yourself be overwhelmed by the green and blue shades of the sea, and finally dive into the water for a refreshing bath.

3. La Piazzetta and… Shopping spree!

From Marina Grande, take the Funicular and reach the center of Capri. All people visiting Capri on a day trip from Naples go to the famous Piazzetta, first! Here, you can really meet anyone: from celebrities to sweaty tourists in sandals and socks. La Piazzetta is simply delightful, and its mood changes completely when the last ferry leaves the island in the evening.

Give in to the temptation of a refreshing lemon granita sitting at one of the tables of Caffé Vuotto. Or try a tasty panino con Caprese (bread buns with tomato, mozzarella, and basil leaves, just like the colors of the Italian flag). But be prepared for the bill! Given the exclusivity of the place, it will be above average…

Comfortably sitting in the Piazzetta you will easily notice that the locals are all wearing a white linen shirts, a pair of handmade leather sandals, and a straw hat. The fashion trend of Capri is right this, is essential and refined at the same time. Let yourself be tempted! Get lost in the narrow streets and go shopping in the small boutiques surrounding the Piazzetta.

Capri is the island of perfumes, I was saying, and perfumes here have a name: Carthusia. It is a real laboratory, there is even an alembic! Its fragrances are made by hand with local essences, to guarantee the accurate application of natural methods and give the authentic scent of the island.

4. Parco Astarita and Villa Jovis

10 best things to do in Capri

From the Piazzetta, you can easily reach Parco Astarita. This park covers approximately 150,000 square meters. Once there, you will have the feeling of being in an enchanted garden, embraced by the rocks and overlooking the sea of Capri. A stroll across the park is absolutely one of the most romantic things to do in Capri.

The landscape is simply breathtaking: sea and sky seem to merge into a single soul, separated in the distance only by the coast between Sorrento and Amalfi. In an air that smells of myrtle, heather, and rosemary, you will have the feeling of touching the majestic Faraglioni with a finger.

A short distance away from the park, you will find Villa Jovis. Here you will discover that the island of Capri has enchanted visitors since ancient times. In fact, in the 1st century, Tiberius had 12 villas built on the island and this was the most sumptuous.

Wandering among the remains of the baths and cisterns is amazing. Furthermore, the views are enchanting from there, as well as from the Salto di Tiberio: almost 300 m overhanging the sea! It seems that the emperor used to dispose of unwelcome guests from there!

5. Anacapri

Leave the village of Capri and go up to the highest part of the island, Anacapri. Here, you can visit Villa San Michele, the dwelling of the Swedish doctor Axel Munthe. He arrived in Capri in 1885 and decided to build his house on the remains of an ancient chapel dedicated to St. Michael.

Today, the Villa is a museum exhibiting historical artifacts and boasts one of the most beautiful gardens in Italy. The view from the immense windows of the building is stunning: the whole Gulf of Naples. Before going away, caress the sphinx in the garden and make a wish. A legend has it that it will come true.

6. Monte Solaro

From Anacapri, you can take the chairlift and climb in just 15 minutes to the top of Monte Solaro. With its 589 meters above sea level, Monte Solaro is the highest point on the island of Capri. From its terraces, you can enjoy a spectacular view, from the Faraglioni to the village of Capri, up to the Sorrento Peninsula and the Gulf of Naples.

7. Beaches of Marina Piccola and Punta Carena

Beaches in Capri

Campania region has many beautiful beaches, of which some can be found on the island of Capri. The beach of Marina Piccola, together with the one of Marina Grande, is among the most popular on the island, due to the pleasant view of the Faraglioni. The only downside is that it gets crowded very quickly.

It is worth saying that there are not many beaches on the island. You will find mostly small strips of sand dotted with rocks, or structures that rise on the rocks, like a sort of stilts, on which the sunbeds are laid. However, the island offers many other attractions. Splashing around in its blue waters is only a side activity.

However, if you can’t really do without sea-and-sun formula, then you can go to Lido del Faro in Punta Carena and dive from there into the magic of Capri! That’s my favorite beach… and definitely one of the best things to do in Capri.

8. Trekking: Sentiero dei Fortini

Seeking adventure? The most experienced of you can take Sentiero dei Fortini. It is an incredibly beautiful route, even if extremely tiring, which goes from Punta Carena to Punta dell’Arcera and will take you to the discovery of one of the most stunning points on the island.

Three hours of trekking to immerse yourself in the green of the pine forest, follow narrow paths overlooking the sea, and discover beautiful fjords along the coast. So get ready for one of the best things to do in Capri.

9. Giardini di Augusto

One of the most romantic things to do in Capri is a late afternoon stroll in the Gardens of Augustus, so named for the numerous replicas of Greco-Roman statues that decorate it. These luxurious gardens should have been part of an immense estate by the steel magnate Friedrich

Alfred Krupp, who lived in Capri in the early 20th century, but his project was never completed. Today they are one of the most popular public gardens on the island. From its terraces you can enjoy a spectacular view of Monte Solaro, Marina Piccola and the Faraglioni, as well as the so-called Via Krupp, a panoramic road (unfortunately closed to the public) that winds like a snake down to Marina Piccola.

10. Sunset in Capri

Most romantic things to do in Capri

After a walk through the Capri Philosophical Park in the Migliara countryside of Anacapri, have dinner on the terrace of Da Gelsomina restaurant, enjoying a breathtaking sunset. After an apéritif, try ravioli capresi and pollo al mattone (a chicken cooked in a wood-fired oven as it was in the past).

Not far away, at the Punta Carena lighthouse, you will find the Maliblu bar, another viewpoint from which you can enjoy an unforgettable sunset while sipping a good glass of wine.

There are so many things to do in Capri…

A short boat trip from the port of Naples and you reach Capri. You can easily visit the island in one day, but my advice is to spend at least 48 hours there, to fully appreciate its beauty. Of course, this is just a taste of what Capri can offer. But there is much more on the island!

Wherever you look, you will be overwhelmed by breathtaking landscapes, you will enjoy genuine food prepared with simple recipes in every corner, and you will always find warm and friendly people to welcome you. So, take your time and indulge in the island vibe! Capri is definitely one of the best summer destinations in Italy!
